苏东坡《赤壁赋》是中国文学史上的千古名篇，其反映的作者由月夜泛舟的舒畅到怀古伤今的悲鸣，再到精神解脱的达观，不单对之后的文学产生深远的影响，也成为画家竞相表现的主题。其中“明四家”之一的仇英所绘《赤壁图卷》成为其中的佼佼者。因赋文起首即为“壬戌之秋”，点明时节，故而后世画家也将之以秋景描绘。此图以石青、石绿为主色调，天边青峦起伏，层层叠叠，若隐若现；眼前险崖峭壁，青藤绕树，红叶点点；当头玉兔高悬，月朗星稀，夜如白昼。一叶小舟水上漫游，上载主仆数人：一人捧卷阅读，一人高谈阔论，一人倚靠船舷观赏两岸风光。船首仆僮在吹火煮茗，船尾艄公在轻轻摇橹行船。作者用细腻的笔触将一个秋高气爽、月光如银的宁静夜晚极富诗情地融入令人陶醉的画意之中。仇英出身低微，幼年失学，曾习漆工，酷爱绘画，他近师周臣，远宗赵伯驹，特工临摹，虽为职业画家，作品却极具文人气息，此图为其代表作。
